ENVIRONMENTAL LAW OPPORTUNITIES
Updated 11/17/09
This page provides information about jobs, fellowships, externships, writing competitions, and scholarships, concentrating on opportunities in environmental, land use, natural resources, and energy law and policy. It is divided into four categories: (1) Jobs and fellowships for third-year students to apply for now that provide employment after graduation; (2) externships and internships for current 3Ls and 2Ls (spring semester) and for current 2Ls and 1Ls (summer and next fall); (3) writing competitions; and (4) scholarships.
This list reflects information first distributed through the Environmental & Land Use Law Program's e-mail service every Wednesday. This Web page will be updated weekly to reflect new information distributed the previous week, and to remove opportunities whose deadlines have passed. Check back often! If you are an Florida State Law student and wish to receive the e-mail as well, contact Program Assistant Jeremy Lightner at jlightne@law.fsu.edu.
NOTE TO 3Ls: I encourage you to apply broadly among these jobs and fellowships and to not rule yourself out too hastily. The Law Teaching Fellowships do tend to be highly competitive, and grades and class rank will matter. HOWEVER, for many of the other fellowships, an interest in the subject area — as demonstrated by course work, externships, leadership in student organizations, the International Law Certificate and/or the Environmental Law Certificate — is more important than being at the very top of your class.
In addition, many of the Fellowships are entry-level job opportunities, limiting the potential competition. They can be an excellent way of getting your foot in the door of a larger organization or agency, like the EPA.
