Solicitor General - Civil Appeals

Students will work with the Solicitor general and will be exposed to appellate practice in both the state District Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. Students will review records on appeal, write briefs, and gain familiarity with appellate procedure and appellate motion practice. Students will critically observe one or more oral arguments in the District Court and Supreme Court, and critically review them with an accompanying senior attorney. Each student will also be given at least one opportunity to argue either before a court or in a moot court critique as generally provided by the agency to its attorneys, with the opportunity for videotaping and review.

Prerequisites: Students must have satisfactorily completed Evidence and be certified pursuant to the Student Practice Rule.

Recommended Courses: Florida Criminal Practice, Advanced Criminal Procedure.

Selection Process: The selection of externs is handled by the supervising attorney of the program, subject to the approval of the faculty supervisor. Selection is based on student's overall record, courses, grades, career goals, expected graduation date, and other externships taken.
