Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

Students externing at the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are assigned to work in the office of the General Counsel. Students' duties include reviewing agency contracts, assisting in the coordination of litigation, participating in agency rule making, participating in judicial and administrative litigation, attendance and possible presentations to the commission meetings, legal research, and drafting of agency legislation. Students have an opportunity to develop competency in fact gathering and field investigation, identifying and applying facts to law, developing case strategy, counseling, drafting legal instruments, and writing legal briefs. In addition to judicial and administrative process students also have an opportunity to become involved in the executive branch of government through observing an appearance before the Cabinet on agency issues. Students also have an opportunity to become competent in the substantive areas of the law regulating wildlife in the State of Florida.

Prerequisites: Students must be certified pursuant to the Student Practice Rule. Students must have satisfactorily completed Administrative Law or Florida Administrative Practice.

Recommended Courses: Environmental Law; Evidence.

Selection Process: The selection of the extern is handled by the faculty supervisor in conjunction with the legal staff of the commission. Selection is based on student's record, courses, grades, career goals, and demonstrated interest in environmental law.
