The Florida State University College of Law offers one of the most extensive clinical externship programs in the United States. Students earn academic credit-typically 6 to 12 credit hours-while learning to assume the role of attorney or judicial clerk in the litigation and adjudication of real cases. Externships are available to eligible students who have completed 48 credits of law studies. Many of the programs involve the practice of law, and those students must be certified for such practice by the Florida Supreme Court. For externships beginning after July 2008, in order to be certified, students must have applied in advance to The Florida Bar and received certification clearance.
Externships include:
- Judicial Programs
- Criminal Justice Programs
- Civil and Government Programs
- Legal Services Programs
- Appellate Programs
- International Programs
Certification has benefits both during and after law school. For programs beginning after July 2008, it will require pre-application to The Florida Bar. If you would like to read about certification for student practice or for certification after graduation, go to this Certification link.
