Network

What wireless network card should I buy?

The College of Law wireless network is based on the 802.11 "Wi-Fi" standard. Most notebook / laptop computers come with wireless capability installed, but if you need to add wireless capability to your computer most aftermarket adapters will permit you to connect to our network.

How do I connect to the College of Law wireless network?

To connect to the wireless network in the College of Law you are required to login when you first open your WEB browser. When your WEB browser attempts to reach any part of the WEB you will be presented a login screen. The login identity you will use is your FSUID and password, and until you have visited the FSU Card Center and received your FSU Card(Photo ID) you will not be able to activate your FSUID account. Once you have been added to the FSU Card database you will be able to activate your FSUID by visiting Activate your FSUID. You will need your Social Security number and your FSU Card number to complete the activation process. During the process of activating your FSUID you will choose a password, receive your FSUID, your FSU email account, and the name of your email server. Write down all of these things as you will need them for the duration of your time at FSU and the FSU College of Law.

Laptops

My laptop is "frozen" and won't turn off.

Most laptops will turn off if you hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds. If this fails, unplug the laptop from the power outlet and remove the battery.

My laptop's battery only lasts a few minutes, what can I do?

If your laptop is less than a year old, your manufacturer will most likely replace the battery for free. After that time, you will have to purchase a new battery.

I spilled water/coffee/soda on my laptop, what should I do?

Do not attempt to turn the laptop on! Contact your manufacturer's technical support immediately and follow their instructions.

Can I use my laptop for multimedia presentations (such as PowerPoint) in class?

Certainly! Please click here for more information.

Can I print from my laptop to the Research Center printers?

Yes. There are three printers available in the Research Center on a pay-for-print basis. You can install the printers once you have access to the College of Law wireless network. (Accessing the wireless network is addressed above) Once you are connected to the wireless network you can visit this web page to install the printers, FSU College of Law Student Printer Server. The pay-for-print printers are located in the small room across from the circulation desk in the Research Center. You must use the cash-to-chip feature on your FSU Card to pay for your print jobs. A cash-to-chip machine is located in the same room as the printers in the Research Center.

How do I install the Research Center printers on my laptop?

Detailed instructions for adding the Research Center printers are available in the following document: Adding the Library Printers to your Laptop

My screen is smudged. How do I clean it?

Most manufacturers recommend using a soft, clean cloth dampened with water. Do not use cleaning solvents unless specifically directed to do so by your manufacturer.

Is it safe to put my laptop in its carrying case while it's on?

Only for very short periods of time (5 minutes or less). Laptops, like most electronic devices, are very sensitive to extreme temperatures. If your laptop is unable to get rid of excess heat, it is very possible that the motherboard, CPU or other internal components may be damaged.

Dial-Up Access

Does the College of Law provide dial-up access to students?

No. The university has opted to discontinue dialup support for all faculty, staff, and students. Please visit this site for more information on dialup services: OTC FSU Dialup Services

FSU provides high-speed internet access through its FSU@Home DSL service. For more information, please visit their site.

Email

How do I access my email account?

All students should now be using their FSUID as their primary email. Your FSUID email address is yourFSUID@fsu.edu. All students entering FSU begining Fall 2007 will no longer have a username@garnet.acns.fsu.edu email account only a fsuid@fsu.edu email account. Your email account can be accessed through any modern browser by going to webmail.fsu.edu.

If you prefer to access your email with Eudora, Outlook Express or another email client you can find step-by-step instructions here.

How do I change my email password?

Simply point your web browser to password.fsu.edu or call the User Services Helpdesk at 644-HELP(4357).

Why can't I send mail from home when using Outlook/Eudora?

The mail server will not relay mail from computers that do not appear to be on FSU's network. Therefore, if you use AOL, Mindspring, Earthlink, or any ISP other than FSU, you will not be able to send email. This is a common practice, used to foil would-be spammers.

If you frequently send messages from home, please use the web-based email system available at webmail.fsu.edu

I'm graduating soon. How long will my email account remain active?

Your FSUID email account will remain active for 260 days after graduation.

Is the ad-free version of Eudora available to FSU students?

Yes. You can download it here.

General

I saved my notes/term paper/résumé on a floppy disk and now I can't access it. Can you help?

The Technology Group does not have the experience or technological resources to recover data from floppy disk. Floppy disks are notoriously unreliable. While they are certainly convenient for moving files from computer to computer, you should always, always, always save your files elsewhere, just in case...

I can't get Word/WordPerfect to format my work correctly. Can you help?

No. The library has several books on the use of Word and WordPerfect; they are available at the Circulation Desk. Also, some professors provide document templates for use with writing assignments, so please take advantage of them.

I've lost my Lexis/Westlaw ID or password.

Please contact Mary McCormick in the Law Library.

I recently heard about a security hole in Windows. How do I know my computer isn't vulnerable?

Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and click "Product Updates". Here, Microsoft will provide you with all the latest security patches and updates. In addition, you will be able to download updated drivers for your computer hardware.

A similar site is also available for Microsoft Office products. It can be found at office.microsoft.com.

I think my computer is infected with a virus, what should I do?

First, make sure you have the most up-to-date virus definitions for your antivirus software. This will ensure that all the latest viruses will be detected. Then, scan your entire hard drive for viruses. If any are detected, your antivirus program will list their names and current locations. Finally, visit your antivirus vendor's website. Here you will be able to find instructions and tools for removal of the virus as well as tips on repairing damaged files.

The major antivirus websites are:
Symantec (Norton Antivirus)
McAfee
F-Secure
Sophos
