    Laptops

How do I connect to the College of Law wireless network?

No. Students are not permitted to plug their personally owned laptops in to the networks jacks at the law school.

My laptop's battery only lasts a few minutes, what can I do?

If your laptop is less than a year old, your manufacturer will most likely replace the battery for free. After that time, you will have to purchase a new battery.

My laptop is "frozen" and won't turn off.

Most laptops will turn off if you hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds. If this fails, unplug the laptop from the power outlet and remove the battery.

I spilled water/coffee/soda on my laptop, what should I do?

Do not attempt to turn the laptop on! Contact your manufacturer's technical support immediately and follow their instructions.

Can I use my laptop for multimedia presentations (such as PowerPoint) in class?

Certainly! Please click here for more information.

Can I print from my laptop to the Research Center printers?

Yes. There are three printers available in the Research Center on a pay-for-print basis. You can install the printers once you have access to the College of Law wireless network. (Accessing the wireless network is addressed above) Once you are connected to the wireless network you can visit this web page to install the printers, FSU College of Law Student Printer Server. The pay-for-print printers are located in the small room across from the circulation desk in the Research Center. You must use the cash-to-chip feature on your FSU Card to pay for your print jobs. A cash-to-chip machine is located in the same room as the printers in the Research Center.

How do I install the Research Center printers on my laptop?

Detailed instructions for adding the Research Center printers are available in the following document: Adding the Library Printers to your Laptop

My screen is smudged. How do I clean it?

Most manufacturers recommend using a soft, clean cloth dampened with water. Do not use cleaning solvents unless specifically directed to do so by your manufacturer.

Is it safe to put my laptop in its carrying case while it's on?

No. You should never put your laptop in its carrying case while the power is on. Laptops, like most electronic devices, are very sensitive to extreme temperatures. If your laptop is unable to get rid of excess heat, it is very possible that the motherboard, CPU or other internal components may be damaged.

How can I print to PDF for free?

If you do not wish to purchase Adobe Acrobat Professional to print to PDF documents, there are free alternatives. One alternative is called PDF995 (http://www.pdf995.com). It is a free, ad based, PDF printer for Windows operating systems.

Where can I get a free version of Microsoft Office?

There is no legal way to get Microsoft Office for free. There are, however, other free word processing and presentation software exists though. Sun Microsystems has a version that works well and is usually compatible with Microsoft Products. You can download it here. Another way is to download a reader like Microsoft Word Viewer.

    Dial-Up Access

Does the College of Law provide dial-up access to students?

No. The university has opted to discontinue dial-up support for all faculty, staff, and students.

FSU provides high-speed internet access through its FSU@Home DSL service. For more information, please visit their site.

    E-mail

How do I access my e-mail account?

Your FSU e-mail address is yourFSUID@fsu.edu. Your e-mail account can be accessed through any web browser by going to webmail.fsu.edu. Instructions on how to use webmail can be found here.

If you prefer to access your e-mail with an e-mail client such as Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudrora you can find step-by-step instructions on how to set them up here. Note that the FSU e-mail system used by students is often referred to as JES (Java Enterprise System).

How do I change my e-mail password?

Simply point your web browser to campus.fsu.edu and click the link next to the password input box that reads "Reset your password" or call the FSU IT Helpdesk at 644.-HELP(4357).

Why can't I send mail from home when using Outlook/Eudora?

The mail server will not relay mail from computers that do not appear to be on FSU's network. Therefore, if you use AOL, Mindspring, Earthlink, or any ISP other than FSU, you will not be able to send e-mail. This is a common practice, used to foil would-be spammers.

If you frequently send messages from home, please use the web-based e-mail system available at webmail.fsu.edu

I'm graduating soon. How long will my e-mail account remain active?

Your FSUID e-mail account will remain active for 260 days after graduation.

    General

I saved my notes/term paper/resume on a flash drive and now I can't access it. Can you help?

The Technology Group does not have the technological resources to recover data from flash. While they are certainly convenient for moving files from computer to computer, you should always, always, always save your files elsewhere, just in case...

I can't get Word/WordPerfect to format my work correctly. Can you help?

No. The library has several books on the use of Word and WordPerfect; they are available at the Circulation Desk. Also, some professors provide document templates for use with writing assignments, so please take advantage of them.

I've lost my Lexis/Westlaw ID or password.

Please contact Mary McCormick in the Law Library.

I recently heard about a security hole in Windows. How do I know my computer isn't vulnerable?

Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and click "Product Updates". Here, Microsoft will provide you with all the latest security patches and updates. In addition, you will be able to download updated drivers for your computer hardware.

A similar site is also available for Microsoft Office products. It can be found at office.microsoft.com.

I think my computer is infected with a virus, what should I do?

First, make sure you have the most up-to-date virus definitions for your antivirus software. This will ensure that all the latest viruses will be detected. Then, scan your entire hard drive for viruses. If any are detected, your antivirus program will list their names and current locations. Finally, visit your antivirus vendor's Web site. Here you will be able to find instructions and tools for removal of the virus as well as tips on repairing damaged files.

The major antivirus Web sites are:
    Symantec (Norton Antivirus)
    McAfee
    F-Secure
    Sophos
