May 01, 2008

TALLAHASSEE Florida State University President Emeritus Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte, who is also a professor at the university’s law school, has received a lifetime achievement award from the International Academy of Mediators. The award was presented to D’Alemberte on May 16 in Coral Gables at the organization’s annual meeting.

D’Alemberte was honored for his leadership in helping to develop alternative dispute resolution in the United States.  He chaired the American Bar Association’s first committee on dispute resolution. During his tenure, the committee developed model programs around the country, encouraged courses in dispute resolution at law schools and other schools and conducted several national conferences.

A former president of the American Bar Association (1991-92), D'Alemberte served as dean of Florida State Law from 1984 to 1989 and president of Florida State University from 1994 to 2003. He represented Dade County in the Florida House of Representatives from 1966 to 1972. After leaving the Florida Legislature, he chaired the Florida Commission on Ethics (1974-75) and the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (1977-78). During his time as a practicing attorney, D’Alemberte concentrated on media and public law work.
