Procedures for Prospective Transfer Students

General Requirements

Each year, we are pleased to admit a significant number of transfer students. We accept transfer applicants from all ABA-Approved Law Schools.

Most transfer applicants must have completed their first year of study at an ABA-approved law school to be considered for admission. However, a limited number of truly extraordinary transfer applicants will be considered after completing only one semester at another law school. All transfer applicants must be in the top third of their class in order to be eligible for consideration.

While we generally accept applications for transfers for the fall semester, it is also possible to transfer during the spring or summer terms.

Application Process

All transfer applicants must submit a completed law school application (even if you have previously applied) and pay the $30.00 application fee. If you have applied to The Florida State University College of Law within the last 3 years, at your request your previous application and supporting documents may be incorporated into the new application.

All applicants must submit a personal statement which discusses why they wish to transfer to The Florida State University College of Law.

All applicants must submit copies of the following to the Office of Admissions and Records:

  • Official law school transcript showing all law work attempted
  • Letter of Good Standing from Dean or Registrar of current law school
  • Class rank from their law school Registrar
  • Photocopy of LSAT score(s)
  • 1-2 recommendation letters (law faculty recommendations suggested)
Deadlines

Fall Term The admissions office will accept transfer applications received by June 15. Decisions on transfer applications are made on a rolling basis. The sooner your application is received and complete, the sooner we shall make our decision.
Spring Term The application and all supplemental materials are due December 1.
Summer Term The application and all supplemental materials are due April 1.

Applicants are notified by mail of the Admissions Committee's decision.

Transfer of Credits
  • The FSU College of Law Associate Dean for Academic Affairs determines which credits are transferable.
  • No credit will be given for work in which the student received a grade lower than a "C".
  • Transferred credits are recorded as S/U (Pass/Fail); therefore transfer students begin with a new GPA at the College of Law.
  • To obtain a degree from the College of Law, a minimum of 45 semester hours of approved credit work must be completed.
  • Three-quarters of all credits completed at the College of Law must be graded.
  • Transfer students must take, or have taken, all required courses and meet all graduation requirements.
