Caldwell House
The Johnson-Caldwell House was built about 1850 by George C. Johnson. The second house donated to the College of Law was originally located on Old Bainbridge Road. In 1941, it was purchased by Millard F. Caldwell, who was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Caldwell served as governor of Florida from 1945 until 1949, and was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court in 1962, serving until 1967.
The two and a half story house reflects the Greek Revival style, with four Doric columns highlighting the front porch and the second-story balcony above. Although the interior floor plan has been altered, the woodwork is original. Two interior, crosswall chimneys provide back-to-back fireplaces on each floor. The first floor includes the Millard Caldwell Library which opens to a large parlor.
The house was donated to the College by Mr. and Mrs. Fred McCord. Mrs. McCord is the former Sally Caldwell, daughter of the late Governor, and it is now home to the Public Interest Law Center.
