Rare Book Collection

The Rare Book collection consists of a variety of fine legal publications, photos, documents and autographs. Recent additions include: a handwritten legal opinion by the great English jurist Sir Edward Coke circa 1600; a first edition of The Digests or Pandects of the Emperor Justinian printed in 1553; Sir Anthony Fitzherbert's La Graunde Abridgement which arranges and summarizes more than 14,000 cases from the Year Books; one of the three known U.S. copies of the session laws of Henry VIII. Other autographs in the Library's collection include a letter of marque signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison, and a pleading in Lincoln's own hand.

Many of the items in the Rare Book Collection, such as the 1986 facsimile edition of the 1086 Domesday Book, were purchased with gifts of generous College of Law alumni.
